The MOF expects the country’s real GDP to ease to a range of 5.0-6.0% in 2011, from +7.0% estimated for 2010. This is mainly on account of slowing export growth, but supported by resilient consumer spending. The MOF’s outlook projection is broadly in line with our expectation, as we expect the economy to moderate to +5.0% in 2011, from +7.3% estimated for 2010.

Economic Update - Resilient, But Slowing Economic Growth - 12/08/2010
In line with a slowdown in exports, real GDP growth is estimated to have eased to around 8.1% yoy in the 2Q, from +10.1% in the 1Q. Indeed, the slowing growth will likely continue into the 2H of the year, on the back of a softening in external demand for the country’s exports on account of a slowdown in the global economy.

Economic Update - Real GDP Surged In The 1Q, But Growth Will Likely Slow Down In The 2H - 11/5/2010
We estimate that the Malaysian economy is likely to have grown at a much faster pace of around 8.3% yoy in the 1Q, the strongest in a decade, due partly to a surge in exports and partly to a low base effect. Growth, however, will likely slow down in the 2H of the year, in line with a slower global economic growth. As a result, we expect real GDP growth to weaken to 4.8% yoy in 2H 2010, from +8.0% in the 1H. Overall, real GDP is envisaged to recover to +6.4% in 2010, from -1.7% in 2009.

Economic Update - The Bank Negara Malaysia 2009 Annual Report : Economic Recovery Gains Momentum, Normalisation Of Policy Will Continue-24/03/2010
Executive Summary
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) expects the economy to grow by between 4.5-5.5% in 2010, slightly lower than the Prime Minister/Finance Minister’s aim of achieving a growth of 5-6% announced on 24 February. Based on the various demand component forecasts, the underlying real GDP forecast by the Central Bank for 2010 works out to be +4.65%. This is broadly in line with our projection of a growth of 4.5% and we see no reason to hange our forecast at this stage, as the global economic recovery remains uneven, given sustained high unemployment situation in the key developed countries, the gradual fizzling out of stimulus spending, debt problems in some of the European countries, and deflation in Japan.
