Worst US Recession Since 1930s Ended In June 2009
The organisation responsible for dating changes in the US business cycle, the National Bureau of Economic Research
(NBER), said that the worst US recession since the Great Depression that started in December 2009 ended in June 2009.
In determining that a trough occurred in June 2009, the NBER did not conclude that economic conditions since that month
have been favourable or that the economy has returned to operating at normal capacity. Instead, the committee
determined only that the recession ended and a recovery began in that month. While other economists used certain
definitions to determine turns in the business cycle, the NBER relies on a more complex formula. It frequently waits some
time before making its determinations, as it seeks to use the most definitive data available.
