Banking - May ‘10 System Data - Loan Growth Streaks Ahead - 1/7/2010

May ‘10 banking system loans jumped 11.7% yoy. According to BNM’s statistics, May ’10 loan growth stood at +11.7% yoy vs. +10% yoy in Apr ‘10. Household loans outstanding accelerated further to +12.5% yoy (vs. Apr ’10: +12.2% yoy) while business loans outstanding expanded at a higher growth rate of 6.1% in May as compared to +4% yoy in Apr ’10, partly due to a moderation in repayments during the month. Possibly, this was a reflection of fund raising activities during the month, where the net funds raised in the capital market stood at RM220m in May, as compared to RM8.5bn in Apr. Business loan disbursements were relatively stable mom and remained broad-based. Growth within the SMEs sub-segment slowed to +1% yoy (Apr ’10: +4.6% yoy).
